Era Projection

Move a golfer across eras, and the field is what re-prices, not the golfer.

An era projection is a translation with a stated confidence. The equipment, distance, agronomy, and setup of the game have changed sharply by decade, and a change moves where a golfer's profile sits relative to the field, not his identity. The engine shows the crossing factor by factor, carries the one scheduled change on the horizon, the ball rollback, and flags every era read model-derived until it is validated.

Case 01 · an era change re-prices the field, not the golfer

The same swing. A different value against the field.

The game's equipment, distance, agronomy, and setup have changed sharply by decade, and a change moves where a golfer's profile sits relative to the field, not his underlying identity. A distance-dependent profile is worth more in a distance-friendly era and less in a penal, precision-first one. The engine locates the change in the field. Pick an era and watch the modern bomber re-price.

Persimmon and balata, short by modern standards, softer turf; distance separated the field far less.

His swing does not change: the same clubhead speed, the same shot shapes. What changes is what that profile is worth against the era's field, on the era's equipment and setups. The engine moves the number by moving his position against the field, and shows the whole crossing as a projection, not a fact. The era re-prices the field. The golfer's identity stays put.

Illustrative engine read on the real Mode 8 pipeline (archetype lookup, factor sum, era-distance scaling, level attenuation, per-factor output). Composite golfer, demonstration figures, every era read model-derived and lower-confidence.

Case 02 · the ball rollback (v0, current-as-of, in-flux)

The rollback re-prices the field. Distance-dependent loses most.

The one scheduled change on the horizon is the golf-ball rollback, and it is flagged v0, current-as-of, and contested, because the rule and its magnitude are still in flux. It is the clearest example of the whole idea: it re-prices the field, not any one golfer. Reducing carry compresses the distance advantage, so a distance-dependent profile loses the most and an accuracy-and-short-game profile gains in relative terms, and the setup and agronomy response compounds it.

Reducing carry compresses the distance advantage. The bomber loses relative position, the precision player gains it, and the setup and agronomy response compounds the shift. A field re-pricing, not a rewrite of either swing.

The rollback does not rewrite the bomber's swing or the precision player's. It shrinks what raw carry is worth against the field, so the same two golfers trade relative position, and the engine reports that as a field re-pricing with a confidence band, not a settled verdict, because the rule is not yet settled. A field re-pricing with a band, held contested until the rule and its magnitude are known.

Illustrative engine read on the real ball-rollback structure (a field re-pricing that compresses the distance advantage, distance-dependent profiles losing most). Composite golfers, demonstration figures, the rollback flagged v0, current-as-of, and contested.

Case 03 · the per-factor breakdown as the product

A number you can audit. Factor by factor.

The factor table is the product, not a hidden step. Equipment and ball, distance, agronomy and firmness, and setup severity each carry their sign and magnitude for this archetype, summed before scaling and attenuation. The point is auditability: you can see exactly which era differences moved the number and challenge any single one, rather than being handed a verdict.

Every row is a claim you can argue with: this is how much the distance difference moved him, this is how much the setup change gave back. A reader who disputes the distance factor can see its exact contribution and discount it. The forward projection into a faster, more specialized modern game carries wider bands than a backward one, and the whole table stays model-derived until it is empirically validated. A number you can audit factor by factor, flagged model-derived until it is validated.

The law underneath
A translation, and a translation has a confidence.

A change to the equipment or the setup re-prices the field, not the golfer's identity, so the engine moves the number by moving where his profile sits against the field, shows every factor it moved and by how much, flags the whole thing model-derived until it is validated, and holds the rollback contested because the rule is not yet settled. You are handed an audit you can argue with, never a verdict.

The era re-prices the field. See what it connects to.

The era read rides on the same archetype and course machinery the rest of the engine uses, and it feeds the field, the value, and the cross-era comparison. It is a projection with a confidence, never a settled number.
